Thanks for the link mcbean, I like your blog also. It is good to read intelligent comment on dance and especially on Gene Kelly. I too watch his dances frame by frame. He was always passionate about 'line'. That is why he wore tight fitting costumes - about which I do not complain!!. He said that sailor suits were ideal dance costumes for that reason.
ReplyDeleteThere is a story he tells about the censors, who used to visit the sets and measure the length of the female costumes to make sure they were 'decent'. Gene would then proceed to cut slits in the skirts so that the line could be seen properly. Leslie Caron said he used to turn on the charm when the censors came around, especially if they were female, in order to get what he wanted.
